REALISMO MÁGICO Realismo mágico, which derives from a term coined by the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier in 1949, lo real maravilloso, refers to a primarily Latin American literary genre in which the writer combines elements of the fantastic and realistic in a conscious effort to reconcile tradition with modernity and American-Indian and Black oral culture with European literary writing.
